Beth,

It would be best to prune those stems right after the first set of flowers end.  I have had this problem in the past and have had it some this year.  It is probably a nutrient problem.  I am wondering if all the rain and no sun has played a part in it this year.

I have heirloom tomatoes in a hoophouse, pruned to a single or double stem. The shoots that the flowers bloom on/fruit develop on become large stems and continue to grow, putting on more flowers/fruits. Do ya’ll trim these after the first fruits or let them develop and trellis them also? Any comparison of their productivity with the main stem’s productivity. I have trimmed them in the past, but if I’m not right on top of weekly trimming, they grow fast enough to flower and I hate to cut off anything with a flower on it.

Thank you.
