Peter,
I too am in Northern Vermont and am doing the exact same thing, only not on
an organic basis. I think I know who you are and we live very close to each
other. My email is somersfarm AT kingcon.com

Subject: [Market-farming] Greenhouse toms in container culture

Hi. I am new to this list. We grow about 5 acres of organic veggies,
herbs, and flowers, in northern Vermont. We also have two greenhouses
and two hoophouses.

We had a particularly bad disease problem in one greenhouse last year
(bacterial canker), and with the help of Carl Hammer at Vermont Compost
Company, and a plant specialist at the University of Vermont, we have
decided to go to a container culture for that house for a couple of
years. We will be laying down old greenhouse plastic, building wooden
bins (2' x 2' x 90'), filling those bins with a fairly complete growing
on mix from Vermont Compost, and seeing what happens. We grow Buffalo
tomatoes, plus some Sungolds and colored peppers in our houses. Buying
in new growing media obviously adds to our expenses, but using what is
essentially raised beds on top of plastic might get us to market a week
or two earlier this year. Hopefully, it will be close to a wash.

Has anyone out there had any experience doing anything like this?
Anyone have any obvious tips, pointers, resources for growing in a
greenhouse container culture? So far, we have just been making this up
as we go alone. Thanks in advance.
