This is just a question, Pat, but isn't there a point with melons when you need to cull new fruit for the benefit of the fruit that started earlier?
As far as the vines in the path: next year, start someone walking the paths daily with a hoe once the vines start running out of the beds and flipping the running ends back into the bed (or off the paths). It has to be done every day, it seems!
Otherwise, good work!

Actually, I'm more worried about them killing the vines as they walk the field. There's no place to step without stepping on baby melons. I've never seen them continue to make like this. The vines are full of almost ripe melons and just as many babies. I guess I'll just close my eyes since they don't have good foot coordination, never mind hand/eye. lol

Pat,
I am guessing that you are worried about damage due to your equipment (tractor & wagon).
What I have seen others do is have the equipment running beside the field and you have several people walking & picking and tossing the melons from one to the other to the other to the other to the person on the wagon. Hopefully they all have good eye/hand coordination.

I also have a melon question. We have the most abundant crop of watermelons
we have ever had. The vines are very tall and has consumed every square
inch of the patch. We have melons that should be ready in the next couple
of weeks and then there are tons of new ones still making. How do we go
about harvesting this jungle of melons without doing extensive damage to the
smaller melons and vines? Any ideas?
Pat
