Hi Liz,
Congratulations on your new place!
I know we've discussed this a while back, but I'll put in my two cents anyway. I've got my pasture rented out since I don't have
the money or guts to be in the cattle business right now.
I'm doing the pastured poultry and market garden
with myself and raising 4 boys that are getting old enough to be a help. I don't
have the money to invest in machinery that isn't busy MOST of the time and I
don't have the know-how to fix it if it breaks down and keep up with the
maintenance. I suppose I could learn all that, but it's not what I want to do.
After being here 5 years I've found a neighbor that
has been a wonderful help and has all the equipment anyone would ever want. He
loves to run his machinery and has all the tools and know-how to run it and fix
it. It takes time to find someone that can "partner" with you, especially
when you're in a new area. It also takes some flexibility on timing. I can't
just take the tractor and go do what I need to, but if the equipment broke down
on me I'd be in the same boat.
Andy has some excellent points and if you can set
up for your animals to do the harvesting you'll save fuel and time - or rather
use your time differently. I'd suggest checking Acres U.S.A. and
Stockman Grass Farmer for more ideas and reading about others' operations. Acres
has lots of articles in their archives online at www.acresusa.com
There are lots of new developments with stockpiling
and winter management.
Anyway, I think it's worth considering rather than
adding more debt to your operation.
Good luck & have fun.
