At the Atlanta Morningside farmers market, a former vendor used to cut the bamboo in 6 to 8 inch sections, and use them as small flower vases. You buy a bunch of flowers for $4, you keep the vase. One stalk could yield a dozen vases. They ultimately cracked or rotted, but they worked to make sales and keep plants hydrated.

We have a row of bamboo, about 20 feet tall, as a screen/wind break and easily keep it under control by cutting off the new shoots when they come up every spring.  Otherwise it would spread about 8 to 10 feet in every direction.  It might be worthwhile trying to find a market for it.  A friend told us about seeing a single 8 foot stalk for sale at Wal-Mart for $4.98 in the craft section.
