We have a garlic farm in North Carolina and harvest garlic from June 1st to
July 1st. This time of year the garlic is growing and so are the weeds. We
have alot of shallow rooted spring weeds like chickweed that quickly covers
the beds. Our summer weeds (with deep tap roots) don't really start growing
till early-mid May and with us starting to harvest at the beginning of June
our summer weeds are not growing long before harvest. We grow allot of
garlic and never seem to get it all weeded. I have noticed that on rows I
never get the chickweed the summer weeds don't take hold before harvest. But
on rows we have weeded, the summer weeds mostly broadleaf(with long tap
roots) take over quickly. Has anyone else had this experience. Do you think
the chickweed might be better left on the beds as a cover? Do you think that
leaving chick weed would be harmful to the growth of the garlic??
