Yes, particularly in the northeast there is a tradition of using hardshell
squash for making pies. Canning companies make pie filling out of certain
squashes. Golden Delicious is one that comes to mind.
The definition of pumpkin and winter squash can be a little confusing and
arbitrary. What makes a good pie often is not.
