West Texas Mark-Don't try to buy lady bugs in those little retail bags. Nature's Control in Medford, Oregon sells them by the quart and gallon. I haven't bought any recently because I have plenty, now. It seems like a gallon was about 72,000 lady bugs, but it is all a blur. Keep in mind that adult lady bugs eat very few aphids, it is the larvae that are voracious feeders. The adults like to hang out in large piles and mate all day-occasionally one gets hungry and goes and finds an aphid to eat. It is important to have nectar sources for lady bugs and other beneficials. I leave a 4-5 foot buffer around my fields where queen annes lace and nigella volunteer and the lady bugs, lacewings and parasitic wasps really appreciate it.
