If the first or second tendrils or curly ques as I call them are dry, they are ready, lay out and sun dry off the vine for 3 days, turning daily before storing in a cellar otherwise they are ready for sale. This is the same method used around here in Middle Tenn for pumpkins, gourds and watermelon and cantalope. Other method is to pick one and cut it, seeds will be full and the pulp not green. But is you are already bright yellow or orange, they are ready.
