We have a bad problem with Yellow Nut Sedge developing. Until
last year we had it in just a few places, and tried to dig it out before
August when the underground nuts develop. Last year was really
rainy, and I'm guessing that's why it's got so bad. It particularly takes
over where we have (oak) sawdust mulch, around our blueberries,
gooseberries and the cold frames.
Does anyone have suggestions on how to get rid of it
organically? We could remove the gooseberries, if necessary. We
could temporarily move the cold frames, but I don't want to give up
the blueberries. Has anyone had any luck with black plastic or other
impermeable mulches? How long did you mulch for? Other
suggestions have been ducks or pigs. Personally I hesitate to
commit to keeping livestock. Has anyone been successful with
sequential cover crops and frequent cultivations? If so, which cover
crops and how long for?
Will it regrow under tree shade? Our system so far has
been to shovel out the old sawdust and sedge once or twice a year,
and throw it in the woods. Then we re-mulched with double
cardbiard and new sawdust. This isn't working anymore! Help!
All suggestions welcome. We're in central Virginia, zone 6b,
"usual" rainfall about 40" per year.
