These conversations seem to ignore the effect that domestic cats have had on ground birds.
As far as I know, the loss of our native population of quail, kildeer and pheasants (if I may say native in that case ;-) is due to the free roaming cats of suburbanites who have sprawled into rural areas.
No fear of mowing up the nests of groundbirds in this area!! Cats got them all a long time ago!!
