Well folks, I tried red plastic mulch this year, and it has been an unqualified failure.
I tried it with strawberries, bare root planted in January, and with tomatoes I set out the first of May.
The plants are healthy enough, that's not the problem. Here is the problem: red plastic mulch does NOTHING to prevent weed growth underneath the plastic. I have huge healthy weeds growing under there, whereas in the field where I can cultivate, I have little or no weeds at all.
My conclusion is that the red plastic, while it may have an effect on the plants, is worthless as a mulch. I just ripped it all off my tomatoes.
