Hi folks,

I use the old saw of a three-legged stool to explain sustainability.

Your system must be socially sustainable - that means you have the time with
your family you got into this business to preserve. You treat those who
work with you - advisors, volunteers and those who you pay - with dignity
and respect. You give back.

Your system must be economically sustainable. If you rely on off-farm wages
as a strategy, that's perfectly fine. Just make a heads-up decision on
whether your farm supports your family or your family supports its farming
choice.

Your system must be resource sustainable. From human resources to soil and
water, if you burn it out and use it up there is no legacy for the next
generation. Try to leave all a little better than what you found it.
