Pat, yes. It's my preferred method. Saves on backaches and you can
relocate them as the seasons change.. Because the plants are only 3" high
at harvest there is plenty of soil for them. (I use the trays without
cells, of course.)
I also like this method for salad greens. I get flea beetles and having
the trays elevated keeps them off.

Rosie, can you grow the mesclun mix to harvest right in the
seed tray?

I was wondering if there's enough depth for the roots. If
it would work, it would certainly save on soilless mix (or
whatever is used) because the flats have lots of area but
little depth.
