We are putting in raised beds and bought three inches of compost and three
inches of soil to fill our six inch beds. I had the mixture analyzed and it
was ³too alkaline to grow vegetables². The recommendation was to add sulfur
and use nitrogen only fertilizer.
Could the high alkalinity be caused because the compost isn¹t seasoned
enough? There are small black sticks in it. I know the organic material that
isn¹t broken down will use up the soils nitrogen. Will foliar feeding be
more effective than soil application for the plants that are already up?
