Transplanting carrots is not considered a good idea because of one very important quality reason = forking. Any limited amount of damage to the apical meristematic area of the primary root will lead to loss of apical dominance in that meristem and result in excessive secondary rooting which leads to the forking. And it does not take much damage to the carrot root apex to produce this result. High ammonia levels quite commonly the result of fresh manure or compost, soil insect damage, hitting a rock, tillage, etc can give this result.
