A farmer in MA told a group of us at NOFA MA summer conference that he doesn't plow in his old beans that he's through picking because they serve as a trap crap for the mex bean beatles.  I don't have many so I don't know in my own experience, but he's been farming for years-500 member CSA.

I will be placing the blocks on homemade trays that have a 1/2" thick plywood base. My plan is to use a seedling heat mat for the germination period. I don't know if the mat will provide enough heat to warm up the soil blocks (which are 2"x2"x2") through the plywood to the desired 70 to 75 degree temps. My basement stays pretty cool, anywhere from 40 to 50 degrees, so the heat mat will be necessary. One thought was to place the soil blocks on a thinner plastic tray until they germinate and then transfer them to the plywood trays. Does anyone know if the blocks will hold up to this move without the root structure in place? I am using Johnny's 512 mix which is supposed to be good for blocks. Maybe the 1/2" plywood will conduct enough heat so I can germinate on the wood trays? I am seeking advice from the wealth of information I know exists out there on this list.
