I wonder if you are confusing things a bit? This would NOT in any way be
connected to GNU. It would only be patterned on the licensing arrangement
under which GNU was set up ... which was the GPL.

For those who may not know the terms, GNU is a clever recursive term which
is saying that "Gnu's not Unix." (Of course it actually is in a way:) And
it, along with the Linux kernel, forms the GNU/Linux OS.

But the GPL, the General Public License, would be a legal document that
insures that the copyright holder(s) extend out the copyright to anyone who
is willing to follow certain rules. Like you could not take the copyright
for yourself.

Wouldn't cooperatives be too much like corporations in that they want
proprietary control. A GPL is nearly the antithesis of such control and is
more like public domain but still maintaining integrity and standards.
