This being my first year of farming full time I learned one valuable lesson that will last a long time. It doesn't matter how beautiful and healthy the vegetables are that you grow if there isn't a market planned well in advance. Actually this being the startup I was primarily interested in what would grow well so having planted in late May after the last frost here I put most of my efforts into establishing the growing space and preparing the soil. Turns out I can grow most anything, so planning for next year will center around what SHOULD I grow in terms of input/output/labor/marketability. Maybe you folks could give some suggestions on what seems most cost effective.

It did seem that I could sell all of the Halloween pumpkins I could grow for a great price and with little in the way of labor input.  Beyond that, I feel that either growing for restaurants by contract or establishing a CSA this Fall to participate in planning for next year would be a great help. Any suggestions as to a best book with some real meat on planning and implementation issues associated with launching a CSA would be greatly appreciated as I am already familiar with the basics and the theories and really need some practical do's, don'ts and hows before diving in. FYI ,When Steve Blizzard was setting up apple orchards in Kerrville,Tx they
appiled 12 tons per acre sulfuric acid to raise the ph and to kill the
bermuda.  Didn't kill the bermuda.  Dry weather and repeated tillage will
slow it down.
