Hi Folks,

Here are things to consider re: plastic bags

Is cellophane an option for you?

Does your local jurisdication have rules about the re-use of packaging?

Are you certified organic? - If so, you probably cannot re-use packaging.

Part of sustainability is economic sustainability. If the majority of your customers need to be trained to bring their own plastic bags or are simply used to the convenience of having new plastic bags, how much are you willing to pay to train them? What does this do to your bottomline?

What are your alternatives?
Jay suggested the canvas bags. A doable but capital intensive solution. If you have the cashflow, it can come out of your advertising budget.

We recycled paper grocery store bags - barrel bags - for both our CSA and farmers' market. We also recycled t-shirt bags as outer bags and had some new ones as back-up. We did, however, use new produce bags for customers in the market to bag their own and to pre-bag the CSA produce. It simply met the expectations of the majority of consumers. I was more willing to teach them to eat more fruits and veggies, understand the importance of sustainable agriculture and support local farms than to recycle plastic bags.

All our local supermarkets here recycle film plastics. We still separate all our recycleables and schlep them to the facility once a month. We let our customers know where to recycle and would recycle their plastic bags if they left them with us.
