Nan,
The only thing I can suggest, other than Amdro (which is THE most
effective product for fire ants) would be to immerse the pots in a
bucket of water. The ants will float to the surface. Then you will
have to find a way to scoop them up without being bitten. I
researched this long and hard after my husband went in anaphylactic
shock from ONE bite. There is no really effective organic method that
I could find. Ammdro has some type of poison in a cornmeal bait and
really stays quite localized. The workers take the bait back to the
nest where the queen and others it it...bye, bye fire ants. These can
be sooo nasty that I would suggest going with Amdro.
