Corn rootworm beetles do lay eggs on the soil surface. But they really don't
cause any harm to cucurbits. They just feed on pollen, which the plant has
plenty of. They look like, but are not the same as, cucumber beetles.
Squash bugs lay their eggs on the underside of leaves. Squash vine borers
lay their eggs at the base of the plant on the crown or a stem near the
crown.
