Mike, I think you asked me about selling at the Kankakee Farmers' Market.
For you and anyone else who is interested, the Saturday market is closed to
additional vendors at his point unless they are selling something that no
one else carries. We have 25 vendors this year. The flower vendors and
produce vendors are getting paranoid about the competition even though we
have an advertising budget and plan that is leagues beyond what we did last
year. I hope our marketing plan produces so many customers we have to run
back to the farm to get more produce to keep the market open. That happened
once our first year!

However, the weekday market in Bradley, Illinois is open to any new vendor.
It is from *AM - @PM on Wednesday. You must carry a $1,000,000 liability
policy covering the Village of Bradley and the owner of the parking lot. We
have several local insurance companies that will provide the coverage at a
reasonable cost. My policy cost $67 last year through State Farm. You
cannot sell anything that you do not grow yourself. If you do, the village
will charge you an additional $500 for a special sales license. Finally,
that market requires a $25 per day sales fee.

There are also several special occasion markets that are available for sales
of produce. Peotone Country Festival (Sept, 8 - 9) and the Bradley VFW
(June 9) are looking for produce vendors. There are no special sales fees
for these events. We have also sold at a harvest days festival at the Perry
Farm but we haven't heard from them yet.

If you are interested in joining the K3 county farmers' market, these are
great opportunities to get to know the market manager, Merrill Marxman, and
the other vendors. The best way to get into the Saturday market at this
point is to make those contacts.

I also understand that Peotone is starting its own farmers market and
Merrill at the USDA office (Farm Service Agency) could probably give you the
details.
