While reading all the posts I was asking myself the
same question.
When building a new greenhouse, it would be a relatively
simple proposition (though somewhat expensive) to pour
the greenhouse slab over lengths of cement pipe over a
gravel bed (for insulation and drainage). With the pipes
extending the full length of the floor slab and open at both
ends the result is a horizontal compost heap. which could
be charged with composting material before the weather
turns cold. Concrete is a good conductor of heat and
the heat released would be substantial.
Additionally, by running a perforated pipe through
the tops of the pipes, methane gas could be trapped
and compressed into a tank by a solar pump to use
for extra heat when needed.
The pipes and gravel bed would be below grade to
help maintain the pipe seals.
