Title: peddlers at farmer's market Our organic farmer’s market is currently reeling from a “peddler” who posed herself as a “self-certified” farmer and refused farm visits by claiming she had to charge a consultation fee of $350 for a visit. Preposterous? And our wimpy market manager turned his head as did some of the growers because she was the big drawing card at our market – offering a broad array of vegetables, fruits, baked goods, and prepared foods (couldn’t we all if we didn’t have to plant, weed and harvest?). She also kept the mailing list and sent weekly mailings to many of the regulars, which should have been done by the manager or our sponsor, a private school.
Now that she has been exposed our manager is worried about being able to draw a decent crowd and dragging his feet on an early market start that we all voted on last fall and for which some of us have already planted. This is such a good market, knowledgeable customers willing to spend money on good food, great location, the set-up is under trees so we always have shade, bi-weekly chef’s demonstrations, etc. And this one brazen “broad” could ruin it for all of us.
Don’t let them get get a foothold in your market – much like corporations they don’t have the soul and certainly don’t value their produce like we do.
