Title: Re: predators and dogs
Our Great Pyr barked all night ( and roamed) but so have all the
other breeds we tried. We have lots of coyote, and I finally
decided any dog was going to bark all night just to keep the coyote
away.
As far as breeds go, we had good luck with a Bouvier around birds
too. Ours was excellent helping with moving lambs and kind and
gentle with birds. He would lie and watch the chicks for
hours.
Now we have a Newfoundland/black lab cross from the local animal
shelter. He also is gentle and protective of our own birds, but
once chased off an eagle that was threatening the chickens. We
don't have sheep anymore so I don't know how he'd be with them.
He stays home, barks when someone comes up, roars off into the woods
barking warnings if the chickens make any noise, and is in general
protective of all of us.
I've heard that Great Pyrenees bark all night. That's part of their marking their territory and keeping other animals away. We had seriously considered getting one until we heard this (from friends who have one and from some summary on their breed.) Is this everyone's experience? Or do you find this is not true?
