Lucy -
We have used Tuffbell for several years. It does last much longer than the
other row covers. I haven't had it rip with normal wear or abrasion. I've
used it year after year. I can see where deer and coyote have run over it
and it's still in one piece, just indented into the soil. Some of my
pieces are 4 years old. There are two easy ways I know that it can be
destroyed. I used one piece over transplants in a patch of ground where
chickens had become accustomed to scratching. The chickens got out, and
totally shredded the Tuffbell. Lots of money, shredded to bits. I had a
long piece over some other transplants that I had fertilized with a fish
based fertilizer. Our dog couldn't resist the smells and went up and down
the 100 ft row digging through the Tuffbel to the fertilizer and uprooting
the transplants. More money shredded to bits.
It doesn't cook plants at high temps, I don't use pricy clips, just bricks,
rocks etc.. It does stiffen a little with use so it takes a more time to
stretch out over a bed. The fabric is actually woven and small plants like
carrots will grow through it if you don't come by and raise it once in a
while. I wonder if it is as effective as a pest barrier compared to the
"felted" types like agrifab?
I try to invest in some Tuffbel each year. I'd suggest you try a small
amount first and see if it works for you.
I solved the dog problem by buying fertilizer in late winter and piling the
sacks in the garage where the dog sleeps. He got a nasal overload and
didn't bother my plantings that year.
