Here in North Carolina the General Assembly set aside funds 2 or 3 years ago for small non-state farmers market to apply for. These grants could be custom made to fit that markets needs. Our market (Carrboro Farmers Market) apply for and received funds to purchase a permanent sign, assist the town in paying to improve a parking lot, trolley service for the heavy use months and park benches. Whereas another market received funds to purchase these push-up tents to provide cover to the vendors because they used a parking lot to sell in.
In the tobacco settlement 50% of the funds are to be set aside to assist communities to meet their needs due to reduce farm income from tobacco growers. Here in Orange County they applied for funds to build a market shelter in Hillsborough and fund a position to help promote locally grown products. They did not success this time around.

I'm going to attend a meeting designed to create a formal statewide farmers market association next week.  Do any of you have any ideas about what the state Department of Ag could do for our individual farmers' markets regarding promotional information, education, grants, etc.?

Any pitfalls I should be aware of?
