I have used everything from dirt to bricks to rebar for row cover and have
been dissatisfied with all of it. I can't tell you how easy it seems to be
to hit a stray brick or piece of rebar with either the lawnmower or the
tiller, not a pretty sight. So this year I splurged and bought the plastic
hold down pins from Johnny's. I love them, its so easy to harvest and
replace! And we've had incredible winds this year, 50 mph+ and they've held
up well, only one or two have pulled out and it didn't cause all of the
remay to blow. I highly recommend them. I'm currently using them to hold
down my drip tape until I get the mulch over it since it has a tendency to
blow around and crawl. I close my drip tape with wire ties and I just stick
the pins through the loops on the end and into the ground. The best part is
that they are red and highly visible wherever they end up!
