Wagbo Peace Center is seeking a married couple for it's long-term core staff. The Wagbo Peace Center is a 501(c)3 nonprofit experiential education center teaching nonviolence and sustainable agriculture. Our mission is to model peaceable, sustainable living and to teach the related concepts of peace, nonviolence, sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship. We are a membership organization with approximately 150 member contributors and a committed board of directors and trustees. Our financial support comes from farm income, program fees, fundraising, and trust fund income. We are six years into a ten-year development plan and the program is growing faster than our staff. We are in an on-going search for people who are mission-oriented and ready to make a long-term commitment to the center's development.
Wagbo Peace Center is located in East Jordan, Michigan
(northwest lower peninsula) on a 212-acre homestead. Three-quarters of the
land is northern hardwoods, and one-quarter is open pasture and tillable
fields. The farm is a working model and includes a two-acre organic garden
with a thirty-share CSA marketing program, permaculture greenhouse with attached
chicken coup (50 layers), pastured poultry(1000), rotational grazing for Belgian
draft horses and Jersey cows, apiary, small orchard, 2200-tap maple syrup
operation, WoodMizer band saw mill, sustainable forest management, rabbits,
composting and woodworking. Educational programming currently includes
youth-at-risk apprenticeships, college interns, various community programs, and
school tours. Future programs
will include week-long residential education for school groups in
nonviolence and sustainable living, summer camp program with an international
focus, conferences and retreats. Long-term
staff will help in the development of these programs.
The right
couple must have the combined skills of: small scale diversified farming (some
horse experience preferred), working with youth, office management (including
up-to-date computer skills), public relations, and excellent communication
skills. Previous business ownership is a plus, as is experience with
living in community. Both must be mission-focused, and able to devote
their best energy to the center's development, while making Wagbo their
long-term home and community. Both must have a desire for a lifestyle that
is farm based, simple, environmentally conscious, rooted in pacifism, and shared
in community. Requires strong work ethic, organization, common sense,
foresight, and integrity.
East Jordan is a small town of
1500 in a hilly river valley, on the shore of Lake Charlevoix. Arts and
music are common, and the area thrives on tourism from seasonal resorters and outdoor recreationists (hunting, fishing, hiking, mushrooming, skiing,
boating). It is a
conservative blue collar town, 17 miles
from Lake Michigan, 70 miles from the Mackinaw Bridge, and within a 50 mile
radius of three larger towns (Petoskey, Traverse City and Gaylord
Furnished housing with all utilities (except phone), partial board (shared farm harvest), and a small salary are provided.
