Hi all,

Scab on apples is cause by a fungus that overwinters on leaf fall under the
trees. Rain splashes the fungus onto new shoots and fruits. Additional
rain can cause secondary infections by splashing spores around the canopy.
Anti-fungals ie sulfur, can help stop an infection in progress. Prevention
includes disking in or removing fallen leaves from the orchard floor.

Scab on potatoes is caused by a soil bacteria that's promoted by neutral or
basic soil. It's a cosmetic problem, but in this culture... Some
varieties are more prone to scab than others. It also seems to be a
problem in soils amended with uncomposted manures
