My Acres U.S.A. paper came today and in it is a small article about E. coli.
the headline: "Startegies to Kill a Killer"
"The often fatal strain of E. coli, a common intestinal bacterium, may
have its days numbered. Recent research has come up with potentially
effective ways to head off 0157:H7, as the virulent strain is called, at
its source - cow guts.
Researchers at Cornell University found that animals fed hay rather
than grain for a few days before slaughter have almost no 0157:H7 left in
their guts. Also, Mike Doyle, director of the University of Georgia's
Center for Food Safety and Quality Enhancements, is promoting feeding
cattle several harmless varieties of E. coli which can crowd out the
harmful strain."
