1. Will upgrading be painless or will I have to reinstall everything?

painless

2. I mentioned a feature like a "most recent posts." Is that on the agenda?

yes but not for .34

3. Will portal.php allow the admin to edit and update?

right now, you can set a "default blog" in wp-config.php. this will be used instead of portal.php. this is just a regular blog that appears inteasd of the portal. you can use any theme. so you can make your own special theme for the portal, which includes anything and everything you want. (Static text, no actual blog functionality, custom mysql queries, etc).

we are also going to release with .34 a theme especially made to act as a portal.

4. Will bloggers ever be able to add their own header and side images?

there are wordpress themes out there that allow customization via the web interface. really you can enable anything via a theme. things like this won't be shipped in the defualt theme anytime soone.

5. I think I have an end-around to the issue of making urls simpler. Install a "shorter URL" app on your server and let bloggers enter their blog title - producing a url like www.domain.com/title instead of www.domain.com/lyceum/title.php

i think it's better to install lyceum on its own domain, if possible. http://blogs.example.com/. at any rate, let us know what solution you come up with.
