Hmm. It seems that where we live & grow, & what or IF, often depends on family or other personal considerations -- more than any philosophy or dreams. Still, you can do a lot on one acre with that much experience behind you. We look fwd to hearing more in the future.

For now I'm getting winter greens settled in, tho not early enough to make good mkt harvest yet. This is unfamiliar territory for me, never planned ahead for winter mkts before. Need more beds of Viroflay spinach! More Siberian kale! More arugula! Technically we should have the lattitude for some winter growth; so 7-8 hrs sun & some temperature protection - bed coverings inside unheated greenhouse -will help get some to mkt. At worst we'll get early start on great harvesting in early spring. When too many other growers are straining to sell radishes.

Reminds me: have you heard (anyone) of Sutherland kale from highlands of Scotland? I started some along with Siberian & Western Front.

It is more a desperate than a wild move Paul. Problem is my daughter in law, who came here from Canada as a wwoofer 4 years ago and has disagreed on principle with everything I said or did all this time. I could have kicked my son and her out but that would not be very pleasant either with a big chance of splitting up the young couple. Instead we give everything to them and start anew.
My wife Nadia (35 years together) sees no problems with the move and that is the main factor. And we will be only 60 in a few months time. Still young.

Whoa, John, that's a pretty wild move. I'm afraid I'm past the age of starting over. Linux? Good for u. As for Open Source I stick with Firefox & Thunderbird.

To all: I've been out of touch for weeks due to technical difficulties. Windows 8 is a monster, but try getting a replacement laptop with earlier version.

Bracing for winter weather here, trying to keep greens going for winter markets.

Slightly different problems here Paul. After almost 30 years of building a self sufficiency farm, giving it all my energy so that it could not be broken the old couple is moving out and starting afresh on 1 acre. The children want to take over on their own. Not so pleasant for us but we are getting older and eventually we would not be able to keep up with the tempo we have set ourselves all this time.
Working towards organic self sufficiency on a much smaller, new plot will be like an old native American giving away everything he possessed and walking naked into the wilderness proving that he is a man.

Built a rocket stove- mass heater + oven for cooking and finished a compost toilet today. Soon the place will be liveable.

Serious problems with the new land consist mostly of wild rabbits in their thousands and no running water near by. Working on a rabbit proof fence for the garden right now for they devour everything you plant. We should not be starving for meat anyway.

I also have a new PC but I opted for a Linux system this time. My conscience playing up. It has a lot of advantages over windows once you get used to it.
