That was our experience with the thornless varieties as well plus when we got ours the seeds were HUGE.

I have Black Satin thornless blackberry. Flavor is ok but quite tart unless the berry gets so soft it falls apart when picked, at which point  the fruit-fly maggots are evident. Calif. & Fla. have the spotted wing drosophila, which lays eggs in intact fruit.
