A couple quick thoughts, have to get ready for market tomorrow. I don't know
my mulching ratios but to me mulching is mandatory in this high altitude arid
climate to reduce irrigation, conserve moisture and protect shallow roots in
summer heat. Dry land farming or bare soil cultivation is really poor
production. There are good sources of info on farm scale mulching and
composting. I think transfer of fertility from field to garden is a bit more
complicated than assumed. The field also renews itself with energy input from
nuclear fusion 92 million miles away, and raw materials from air and water.
It's not a closed system. I do use free, aged horse manure to amend, and
spoiled hay for mulch which slowly composts in place. And no high temperature
composting for the reasons you give.
