People are going to have to make hard choices here very soon, and I'm not sure they even vaguely realize how things are shifting. If they don't cut water from the delta the fishing industry will die. If they don't provide water for farms , california become too expensive to sustain even a fraction of its current population - it'll probably tumble like a house of cards. Watching the foothills and tahoe get developed into suburbias the last few years has been surreal - farmers were protesting losing water rights to some of these low sierra towns more than 5 years ago and nobody listened, they just nodded as the farms go out of business and let the development continue. Today's paper shows silicon valley with 11-12% unemployment (officially) and no method of recovery. All I can see happening there is an emerging pattern of decreased wages, followed by falling property values , perhaps shutting down much of what remains of it in 2-3 years. It'll be quite a mess to deal with when people realize that having paved it over, there won't be orchards there anymore. 'open-space' was removed from the official english word list the bay area uses some time ago. They say the sierra snow pack was 70-80% of normal, I climbed above 7k feet a week ago and saw a lot more early melt , a lot more soil, and post holed a lot more than I remember before. And it seemed to me like the rivers were pretty timid (the truckee in particular) for april. --- On Fri, 4/17/09, Liz <liz@allslash.org> wrote: From: Liz <liz@allslash.org> |
