"You were eating strawberries that scientists have not messed up.  You can grow Alpine strawberries there I am sure. Order the seed.  There are several varieties now available.  There are others.
The USDA has admitted that in breeding new varieties of fruits and vegetables, they forgot one thing: FLAVOR"

Hi Ken,
I appreciate your ongoing postings here. Specifically which strawberry varieties do you feel have not lost there flavor by the new breeding? I haven't seen "Alpine" for sale. Can you recommend any web links for where to purchase seeds and which varieties you think are more flavorful?
Thanks,
Doug
P.S.  My garden is at 4500 ' elevation where inland-coastal mountains meet the desert in San Diego county. Our lowest temperature in the winter can get down to about 15 degrees Fahrenheit outdoors, or 45 degrees in the greenhouse.
