Paul,
I didn't do it, but my brother buried the end of a foot long pvc pipe in each of his mounds this year. He just fill the pipe each day and lets it soak in. It's work, but it seems to be working for him. He has corn higher than his head(6'5") with 5 to 6 ears per stalk.
