Paul, I've planted alfalfa and wheat both just by broadcasting the seed on stubble. I usually try to wait until we're due to have rain overnight, then broadcast the seed just before dark so birds aren't swooping in to pick them up as I spread them. If we don't have rain to help wash the seeds into the soil, I use strips of aluminum foil on the tops of stakes set in the field to help keep the birds scared away from the field. I've heard old cassette tape will do the same.

I'm having trouble searching for something. Anyone tell me what kind of
grains or legumes will sprout by broadcasting on bare ground or stubble
without any soil cover? I need a large area with greenery for rabbit
diversion and compost material.
