Ambrose Bierce once defined a corporation as that inglorious device for obtaining individual profit without individual responsibility. In another era they were called the robber barons. Today, the ADMs, the
Cargills, the Chiquitas, the ConAgras, the IBPs, the Smithfield Foods, the Tysons and others have become the merchants of greed. Former U.S. Senator Fred Harris, is fond of saying that corporations can't be made responsible because they have no soul to save nor butt to kick but they can be made accountable. A.V. As I read about tax breaks for corporate farms, fast track trade decisions that allows multinational companies to decide the future of local communities and watch agribusiness
brazen entrance into local politics, I, like Kirschenmann, am ever more convinced that high input industrial agriculture is not about feeding people and certainly not about keeping people fed. Agriculture today is about power. Its about money and profits for a few. Mary Fund, ksruralctr@aol.com
