I'm told that my great-great-grandfather's family was dismayed when my great-great-grandfather married my Native American great-great-grandmother. During the Depression she fed his formerly wealthy and hungry family with her farm and truly kept them going. After the Depression things went back to them looking down their nose at her and feeling that they were better.
When I was little I'd help her shell peas and snap beans and pull weeds... my great-great-grandmother was still farming when I was a kid.
