Tom, I have saved seeds from peppers over the years.  Simply separate the seeds, put them in a dish or on waxed paper where they get good air circulation and, once fully dried/cured, put them in some container for storage (I use small medicine plastic containers).

I have saved seeds from red and green plump peppers bought in the store similar to those you purchased.  They all germinate and produce good plants, but, these varieties of peppers tend to need much longer growing seasons and dryer, hotter conditions they we can provide in central Mississauga.  Remember, peppers require very hot conditions with lost of moisture in the root to become very sweet.  Peppers are indeterminate, so, I have always gotten a few good peppers from the first flower set but subsequent flower sets tend to have less nourishment, as most of it goes to the first flower set, and therefore do not mature to full thick peppers as the September weather sets in with its cooler nights.

My suggestion is to stick with the hybrids recommended for our area.  I have tried many varieties but the most favoured (quantity and quality) is a variety called Gypsy.  It is a mid size, waxy, yellow-green pepper with a “sheep’s nose’ shape.  Prolific producer even with cooler nights… If you want some seeds I can provide you some.

I have also grown hot peppers (hot Portugal, hot Hungarian, etc) and these invariably produce many more peppers than I can handle.

Joe C.

Hello All,

This is not fruit related but I have a gardening question…

I just bought some great tasting sweet red peppers from Food Basics.  The seeds are plump and look great.

Having never saved seeds, will these produce peppers next season in my garden, anything like the peppers I bought this week?

No idea of variety, but “sheep’s nose” best describes the shape.  They are full sized, red, sweet peppers.

Do sterile seeds like plump and full sized (if it is a hybrid)?

Just curious.

Later,

Tom
