Hi Tom,

What a wonderful read this link provides. Now that everyone has crashed for
the night ( rowers and their families usually opt for early nights! ) I have
grabbed a new pack of paper, set the printer on draft format and started to
print book XV.

Fascinating that only yesterday I queried about grafting quince onto winter
hardy pear rootstock. When you look at the content of some of the nafex
chromosome-related postings, then review quince tasting apples, or medlars
that supposedly resulted from apple and hawthorn crosses, you can see how
folks with lots of time and attention might want to see what results from
breeding different crosses. Although the new pink and orange cauliflowers
now found in the grocery stores do make one pause.

So to answer your question - grafting apple scions onto quince stock - no.
Since we're Zone 4b or 5a, and the quince appears to take a hit with our
weather, it would seem more realistic to reverse the two and graft onto
apple or pear. Now, an interesting experiment would be to graft quince,
apple and/or medlar in close proximity on the same tree, trying to
coordinate bloom time, and then grow out the seeds to see if anything cook
comes about. It's worth an email or two to see if there is any genetic /
chromosome overlaps that could deliver something interesting.

Well Margie, any thoughts on this? What kind of rootstock do you use at
Harrow for quince grafts? Aren't you a Zone 4 down there?

Speaking of multiple grafts - and this is directed to Joe - any pics of your
apple or pear espaliers this season? Have you incorporated any tip bearing
varieties onto your espalier or is it too finicky to bother with them?

To wrap things up - can Joe B and Joe C send me their mailing addresses
off-list so I can send off some Ashmead's Scionwood. I will be collecting
wood during the Christmas break, when there's time to pick some nicer days
for gathering.

Cheers, Bizmark.

Hello Biz,

Modern grafters do not believe that rootstock affects the flavor of the
scion's ultimate fruit. However, the ancients swore by grafting certain
rootstocks to certain scions for improved flavor.

Review this web page, searching for the word "graffe";

http://penelope.uchicago.edu/holland/pliny15.html

I am not sure if it was Columella, or Cato who swore by grafting apple to
quince for better flavor.

You done any grafting in this area?

LAter,
Tom
