I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the attached email chain between myself and Jay Subramanian (in charge of stone fruit research in Vineland) is self explanatory.  The bottom line: they  do not distribute test budwood/scion wood for new unnamed varieties.  All testing will be done via “3-4 growers in a more commercial setting only”.  Pitty!

Joe
You are right about the first part,
Testing advanced selections in future will be done through a material transfer agreement and if you are a grower you are very welcome to be a part of it; however, due to issues beyond my control this will be restriced to a max of 3-4 growers in a more commercial setting only. Again this is somehting over which I have no control and minimal say. Even that has to wait for few years [2-3] due to PPV imposed non propagation ban. I will have to send material to BC for virus testing and cleaning and clean budwood ahs to be brought to a place outside PPV zone and grown before buds can be drawn from them. A long process.....
Hope you can understand
Cheers
Jay

Jay, thanks very much for responding to my email.  I’ll await a response from Joanne at Inter Plant.  By the way, I did an internet Google search but could not find Inter Plant Inc.  They must be associated with Mori Nurseries as her email address has morinurseries.com as the post office.

In any case, I note that you said that “the University do not do any budwood distribution any longer due to IP issues”.  How do you distribute test Vxxxxx cultivars to the trades for trials prior to releasing some of them to the commercial trade?  I wouldn’t mind getting on that distribution list for the next few years to participate in assessment of some of these potential cultivars.

Hello Joe

Thanks for your mail and interest in stone fruits from Vineland. Due to Plum Pox situations we cannot propagate or use our material for any propagation until further orders. Moreover, we at the University do not do any budwood distribution any longer due to IP issues. All our new varieties are licenced thro Inter Plant.

I suggest you contact Joanne Bis at InterPlant Inc  to whom I have copied this email for availability of budwoods for any of the new varieties. In addition they also carry most of the Vineland varieties as well

Best

Jay

Hello Jay.  I was given your name by Margie Luffman, Curator at Agriculture Canada’s research station in Harrow.

Jay, I’m an avid gardener with a keen focus on grafting fruit trees.  I’m particularly interested in the stone fruits, in particular peaches, plums, apricots and cherries.  I would like to know how I would go about requesting either scion wood or bud wood next year.  Also, do you have a comprehensive list of the cultivars available at Vineland.  Please advise.  Thanks!
