"automated Google searches" - careful.  Automated use of Google may be at odds with Google's Terms Of Service.  A few years ago I was tasked with generating some automated reports on Google's page rank for my employer's e-Commerce site.  They may have changed, but at the time I remember reading in their TOS that any sort of robotic access to Google's search engine was prohibited.
 
So make sure your 'bot has a humanesque pattern to its requests of Google.
