Susan,
You are partially correct. iTunes *will* let you save an AAC encoded
file as an mp3,
but not if it's a DRM protected AAC file, which most of the songs in
the iTunes Music
Store are. There are, however, many songs in the store that are
unprotected (they
have a + sign next to them) and iTunes will happily convert those to mp3
without
any problems at all.
