There is a nice website containing myth-busting for HVAC at
http://hphaa.com/knowledge/FAQs/faqs.htm - the writer of most of the material
on that website is in San Francisco area, so the site does not offer local
recommendations.

There is a research report about performance of dehumidifier systems at
http://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy05osti/36643.pdf

I would dump this HVAC company. Ask your neighbors for recommendations.
