I assume you're talking about the new MacBook, so I also assume it's
probably a side-effect of one of the first-release bugs that's being
extensively discussed on blogs and boards and forums everywhere, so my
only advice is "research" and "go nag Apple to fix your motherboard".

Don't blame the OS; it's in all probability a hardware issue. (I see
the occasional temporary lockup on my G4 iBook, and saw them much more
frequently on my ancient 900Mhz G3 Pismo, but it's usually Safari or
a DNS-related issue that brings out the beach ball).

You might also want to grab a copy of MenuMeters, to keep track of your
disk/cpu/memory usage; I've found things get a bit sluggish if you tend
to keep lots of Safari windows open at once, and having the visual cue
to a CPU lockup or memory bloat is useful to me. YMMV.
