tivo will *not* work without being activated, which requires a subscription. at least, not with hacking it...

I may be wrong, but I believe the TiVo and ReplayTV will work without the
service--you would be forced to program them manually, however. I believe
what you are paying for is the convenience of automated programming of shows
to record.
I think I saw some combo hard drive/DVD recorder at Costco starting at about
$200.

I live out in the woods. I don't have satellite or cable, but I do
want to watch the occasional broadcast television show. If I need to
time shift such things, I just use my 10 year old VCR.
Well, it's about to give up the ghost, and so I am looking for a
replacement. I'd like a digital VCR, much like how I replaced my old
tape-based answering machine with a digital one. I don't have huge
recording requirement, either, something like 6 hours should do it.
Now people who don't live out in the woods can get TiVo or ReplayTV,
but I don't want to pay a subscription fee. All I want is the ability
to digitally record shows like on my VCR, even if I have to manually
program the times.
I have also looked at MythTV, but I don't want to have to buy and
manage another computer system. I want an appliance. If someone can
recommend a company that packages MythTV in a sub-$300 system I'd be
interested.
